Some turning tools will cut more wood in an afternoon's turning that a carving tool will cut in its lifetime. Revolving wood requires a special kind of steel for the tools. Because of the speed at which the wood revolves the cutting edge of the tol must stand up to the abrasion and the heat from friction which is generated by the wood. The edge holding qualities of High-Speed Steel are far greater than Carbon Steel. The cutting edge will last up to ten times longer. Also the heat resistant nature of High-Speed Steel reduces the danger of accidentally drawing the temper when grinding.
